Detection of new states using forward proton tagging at the LHC
نویسنده
چکیده
This talk summarises the ongoing proposals to upgrade the ATLAS and CMS detectors by the installation of forward silicon detector systems close to the beam line at distances of approximately 220 m and 420 m from the respective Interaction Points. The physics motivation is outlined, with emphasis on detection of Higgs and Supersymmetric states, and some of the aspects of the apparatus and its performance are briefly described.

Double proton tagging at the LHC as a means to discover new physics We review the theoretical and experimental motivations behind recent proposals to add forward proton tagging detectors to the LHC experiments as a means to search for new physics.
متن کاملA review of forward proton tagging at 420m at the LHC, and relevant results from the Tevatron and HERA
We review the theoretical and experimental motivations behind recent proposals to add forward proton tagging detectors to the LHC experiments as a means to search for new physics. We also review the current diffractive programs at the Tevatron and HERA, focusing in particular on measurements which will have a direct impact on the case for forward detectors at the LHC.
متن کاملForward Proton Detectors at High Luminosity at the Lhc
The term “high luminosity” throughout this article is taken to mean “luminosities at which event pile-up is significant”. In that case, the rapidity gaps typical of diffractive events tend to be filled in by particles from the overlaid pile-up events. Hence the selection of diffractive events has to rely entirely on tagging the diffractively scattered protons which escape intact down the beam-p...
متن کاملPhysics with tagged forward protons at the LHC
We emphasize the importance of tagging the outgoing forward protons to sharpen the predictions for New Physics at the LHC (such as the diffractive production of a light Higgs boson). The rescattering effects lead to a rich distinctive structure of the cross section as a function of the transverse momenta of the protons. We show that a study of the correlations between the proton transverse mome...
متن کاملExtending the study of the Higgs sector at the LHC by proton tagging
We show that forward proton tagging may significantly enlarge the potential of studying the Higgs sector at the LHC. We concentrate on Higgs production via central exclusive diffractive processes (CEDP). Particular attention is paid to regions in the MSSM parameter space where the partial width of the Higgs boson decay into two gluons much exceeds the SM case; here the CEDP are found to have sp...
